Ecuador, Hacienda of San Agustin de Callo

11 rooms • Views of active volcano • Inca ruins
Local Indian markets • Adventure activities

San Agustin de Callo is the only "lived in” museum of Inca Imperial and Spanish Colonial style.  The house stands at 9,857 feet above sea level and is about an hour outside of Ecuador’s capital city of Quito.  Built on the site of an Inca palace, this lovely house is one of the two most important archaeological Inca sites in Ecuador.  It also is the northern-most site to use the Inca imperial-style construction.  In the main courtyard you can see three distinct styles:  15th-century Inca Imperial-style construction, 18th-century Spanish Colonial, and 19th-century Republican.  Through the centuries, the house has served as Incan fortress, an Augustinian convent and as a temporary home for the French Geodesic Mission.  It is now a working farm.  Eleven spacious suites in a newer building have frescoed walls, wood-beam ceilings, and views of the famed Cotopaxi volcano, the highest active volcano in the world.  The five more rustic rooms in the main house have the original Incan walls, and fireplaces in some of the bathrooms.  In addition to its historic importance, San Agustin de Callo is the ideal place for a honeymoon, anniversaries or other romantic occasions.
