Tanzania: Pastoral Faces in the Garden of Eden

"I grew up in East Nairobi so the wildlife and the people of Africa hold a very special place in my heart. I selected Tanzania because I want our guests to enjoy a classic African safari, including a tented camp experience on the shores of Lake Eyasi as well as the safari lodges in parks such as the Serengeti. The wildlife is without equal, and I believe that everyone should see these magnificent animals at least once in their lives.  But I also feel it is important to introduce our guests to the people and cultures of Africa. The  Lake Eyasi area is the only place  where the four major African language families – Bantu, Khoisan, Cushitic, and Nilotic, occur together. Here, too, are the Wahadzabe, an ancient, nomadic tribe of bushmen who are among the last click-speaking hunter-gatherer tribes left. These are people one would not meet on the routine tourist circuit."  Mahen Sanghrajka, CEO

• Explore the wildlife-rich lands of Tarangire National Park, which, in season, is second only to Ngorongoro Crater in its density of wildlife.
• Savor games drives into the ancient caldera of Ngorongoro Crater, where game viewing is outstanding year-round.
• Travel across the wide-open Serengeti Plains to see many of Africa’s most famous residents – from herds of wildebeest and zebra to cheetah, lion, giraffe and a variety of antelope.
• Savor a classic tented camp on the shores of Lake Eyasi, and take the opportunity to hike the trails around the lake, canoe, mountain bike, and walk through nearby tribal villages.
• Step off the beaten path for an entirely different experience from a traditional safari – meet several local tribes or clans such as the Wahadzabe, among the last hunter-gatherers in Africa.

 Lake Duluti Lodge

Day 2:  Arusha / Tarangire National Park
Today, you drive to Tarangire National Park, which, in season, is second only to Ngorongoro Crater in its density of wildlife.  You can spot animals from your lodge.  Visit the Tarangire River, where in the dry season, herds of up to 300 elephants scratch the dry river bed for underground streams, and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland crowd the shrinking lagoons.  Tarangire Treetops Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 3:  Tarangire National Park
Explore the diverse habitats of Tarangire, where conditions are prime for viewing large herds and unusual birds such as Bateleur and Martial eagles.  Tarangire Treetops Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 4:  Tarangire National Park / Mto wa Mbu / Lake Eyasi
This morning you drive to Mto wa Mbu where you go on a three-hour Village walk.  You may meet a variety of tribes people.  This has long been a trading center where many different people have settled, notably the Mbugwe, Iraqw, Gorowa, Irangi, Totoga, Chagga and Maasai.  The area is in fact the most linguistically diverse and complex in Africa.  It is the only place in the continent where the four major African language families - Bantu, Khoisan, Cushitic, and Nilotic - occur together.  You will then proceed to Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp situated on the shores of Lake Eyasi, with sweeping views toward the Rift.  Across this seasonal soda lake, the Alipi escarpment wall rises 2,000 feet up into the Ngorongoro Conservation Area providing a stunning backdrop.  The camp is beautifully set in a Llala palm and acacia forest and is part of 200-acre family-owned farm with a natural spring nearby which feeds into the lake.  It is also home to the Wahadzabe, an ancient, nomadic tribe of bushmen who are one of the last click-speaking hunter-gatherer tribes.  Kisima Ngeda Tented Camp (B,L,D)

Day 5:  Lake Eyasi / Ngorongoro Crater
Early morning cultural activities with the Hadzabi and a visit to the Datoga Tribe.  The Hadzabe are the last hunter-gatherers on the African continent, where 'homo habilis' (the forerunner of modern man) first emerged more than two million years ago.  The Datoga blend in with their environment, their dress being the color of the reddish brown soil.  Only on closer inspection will they appear colorful with their reddish, patched leather dresses, bead work, and brass bracelets and necklaces.  After lunch, drive to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority.  Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 6:  Ngorongoro Crater
After breakfast, descend 2,000 feet along a rocky track into the crater.  It's an idyllic day, replete with picnic lunch.  There is good game viewing here all year round.  Africa’s highest concentration of lions may be viewed in the crater at astonishingly close range amid breathtaking landscapes.  The rhinoceros population is easy to spot.  You’ll also have a chance to view buffalo, wildebeest, zebra, reedbuck, hippos and elephants.  Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 7:  Ngorongoro Crater / Serengeti National Park
After breakfast you will be transferred to the airstrip in Manyara to board your flight to the spectacular Serengeti. Africa’s most famous park is unequaled in its primitive natural beauty and fantastic abundance of plains game.  Throughout the ages naturalists and writers have singled out this very special sanctuary in their paeans of praise.  And with good reason!  No words can adequately describe this stronghold of wildlife.  Singita Faru Faru Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 8 & 9:  Serengeti National Park
During your game drives you'll experience some of the most spectacular wildlife-viewing in all of Africa.  See huge groups of plains game and all the predators, including leopard which you are more likely to see here than anywhere else in the world.  An unforgettable visit is complemented by your elegant lodge, designed like an African village.  During one of your days at the Camp, you will take a short flight in the morning to a landing strip where you are met by a Singita guide and vehicle.  The day is spent enjoying the migration and a sumptuous picnic lunch before flying back to Singita Grumeti Reserve’s airstrip later that same afternoon.  Singita Faru Faru Lodge (B,L,D)

Day 10:  Serengeti National Park / Arusha / Depart
Today you are transferred to the airport for your flight back to Arusha.  You will be met on arrival and taken to the Mount Meru Game Lodge for lunch.  You will also have access to a day room.  This evening you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight.  Mount Meru Game Lodge / Day Room (B,L)
